4 October 2006, 16:13 PayPal rant

PayPal is a strange company with stranger policies.

I currently have a non-us PayPal Premier account. Since I’m about to start a new Split Testing Service next month and I want to offer subscriptions using PayPal, I asked PayPal if I can open a business account on top of the premier I already have (PayPal policies allows one personal and one premier/business account for each person).

I’m still on the fence whether the new company will be established in the US or not, so basically, I asked the mighty PayPal the following is 2 questions…

  1. Can I have multiple premier/business accounts?
  2. Can I have multiple premier/business accounts, when each account has a different country?

The answer I didn’t tell me anything new:

Thank you for contacting PayPal.

I appreciate the opportunity to assist you with your question about having multiple PayPal accounts. I will be glad to clarify that for you. I am sorry for the inconvenience. Unfortunately, members are permitted to have both a Personal account and a Business or Premier account, however, it is against the User Agreement to have more than one Personal account or more than one Business/Premier account.

  • In order to reserve Personal accounts for individual use, we require all businesses to have Business or Premier accounts
  • Each account must have a different email address, bank account and credit card

I understand your frustration regarding this matter and apologize for any inconvenience it might have caused you. If you need further assistance, please contact us at 1-402-935-2050.

Sincerely,

PayPal, an eBay Company

I can’t understand this policy at all!!! Clearly, some people have several businesses… I can’t see why they must choose which one will be using PayPal.

I, for example, sell on eBay and I have a Premier account under my ebay name. If I have one individual Premier Account, and I start a partnership with another individual, their policy makes it impossible for the partnership to have a PayPal account.

This is even weirder when the entities are incorporated in different countries. Am I missing something? Can Corporations/Partnerships/LLC have PayPal accounts at all? They are totally separate entities in the eyes of international laws, but not by PayPal?

I sent another email to PP and I’ll update this post when they’ll get back to me with something substantial.

My client use paypal for his business under his name.

What really bothers me about the email reply is, they sent you an email template. It doesn’t answer your questions…lazy customer service.

I just got off the phone with the “helpers” at Pay Pal. I am informed that to use their services now, I must have a Credit Card, or a Debit Card. I would like to know why an OffShore company, (They say they are not permitted to say where they are located) is needed to buy something from Pennsylvania. Why, all of a sudden, are they so interesred in my Credit Card number?
